ABOUT byHand:

byHand Productions exists to support filmic, digital, audio and visual forms of artwork created by its members (and their related activities).

The byHand festival, an annual festival of film, animation and live art based in Brighton, England with partners in Sydney, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon, was produced by the byHand team and continues as an avenue for the support of developing artists and projects. All works promoted by the byHand festival include some component of live or hand-made production. In its recent New Talkies Initiative, byHand focussed its programming specifically on projects that explored the possibilities of live music performance with film.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF byHand:

The byHand team have a long-standing commitment to the promotion and dissemination of new work situated at the intersection of music, film and live art. Its main objective is to foster the development of and collaborations between local musicians, filmmakers and other artists.

The byHand team is currently working on a project that centres around Lee Miller's life and work using her time in St Malo as a starting point. That project is a natural extension of the filmic, musical, performative and interactive practices supported by byHand.

Following on from the 2004 festival, the byHand team organised a series of performance exchanges between the UK and the USA to facilitate international touring for artists involved in our “New Talkies” programme. Those exchanges included work with Laurence Collyer of the Diamond Family Archive (based in Brighton, England) and Kent M. Beeson (based in Seattle, Washington) to produce The Somnambulist, the flagship “New Talkies” project. Additional projects in 2004 included work with Brighton-based bands including Alaska, The Small, Blanket and others.
